A record number of Davis High cross country runners, seventy seven in all, traveled to the fire ravaged Los Angeles basin to compete in the 56th annual Mt. SAC Invitational and turned in several exceptional individual and team performances on Saturday.
The meet was almost canceled on Friday as hot temperatures along with smoke and high concentrations of particulate matter created unhealthy conditions. However, the wind abated and a small marine flow improved conditions enough for the two day meet to be held for the estimated 11,000 competitors. Even so, Saturday afternoon's last 17 races were canceled because of smoke and high temperatures.
Davis High had the good fortune to race in the morning in relatively cooler conditions. The Blue Devils' day was anchored by an outstanding 4th place team score in the varsity girls' individual sweepstakes race. Freshman Chelsea Reilly ran her best race of the season, taking 30th place with a time of 19:43. She was followed by Kailtin Gregg (35th), Veronica Miqueo (37th), Paige Stewart (43rd), and Nadine Ibrahim (53rd). The team packed very well with only 57 seconds separating the top five scoring runners.
The freshman girls also put together a fine group effort, taking third place in a twelve team field in their section. They were led by Sarah Chan, Julia ter Haar, Kaitlyn Beesley-Campos, Kate Stephensen, and Palina Chordas.
Individually, it was a successful day for Davis, as a bevy of runners recorded substantial personal best times over their previous efforts on the 2.95 miles course. DHS picked up five individual medals; Patrick Lynch and Brendan Gregg were 7th and 8th for freshman boys, while Sarah Chan finsished 15th in freshman girls. Scott Halliday and Grace Pettygrove both took home 12th place medals in their respective sophomore races.
The Blue Devils next competition is at the Monticello Empire League Championships on Wednesday. The boys are tied with Vacaville while the girls sit alone atop the standings entering Wednesday's meet.
