Seeking Davis High School's first ever Sac Joaquin Section Title, the varsity girls track and field team traveled to Rancho Cordova High School for the D1 Section Finals. Senior thrower, Lauren Guerrieri got the Blue Devils off to a great start on Wednesday, finishing 3rd in the shot put. Lauren's toss of 37'2.5" was a personal best and a new school record. Lauren came back on Friday to reclaim her title as Section Champ in the discus throw. She won the competition with a best throw of 140'8" - Not a personal best, but a darn good throw. Perhaps Lauren is saving her discus PR for the State Championships, where she will contend once again for the State title.
Senior Chelsea Reilly put on a display reminiscent of her MEL Championships performance of a year ago. Chelsea set a new school record (4:50.99) en route to winning the section title in the 1600. Chelsea then went on to set another school record (2:14.01) in the 800, on her way to a 2nd place finish. To round out her record-breaking day, she anchored the 4x400 relay team to a 4th place finish, with a blazing 57.9 split. Along with teammates Melinda Zavala, Josephine Devanbu, and Rebecca Hammond, the 4x400 team set yet another school record (3:57.80). Chelsea will try to break her 1600 record again next week as she attempts to qualify for the State Meet for the third year in a row. The girls 4x4 will also be in the thick of things next week, attempting to qualify for the state meet for the first time.
The varsity girls wrapped up the section championship in the girls 3200, where junior Laurynne Chetelat won with a relaxed 10:44.85 effort. Laurynne's 3200 first place finish followed a second place finish in the 1600 and a third place finish in the 800. Laurynne's triple made her the top Blue Devil point-scorer. As a new-comer this year Laurynne Chetelat has taken the section by storm. Laurynne's athletic talent and personal drive will make her exciting to watch at Masters and, hopefully, State. Jonah Weeks and Maddie Hall also made their presence felt in the 3200, finishing 3rd and 4th respectively. The team effort gave the Blue Devils 20 total points in the 3200, icing the team's victory.
The boys had a fantastic day as well. Like Laurynne, Harvey and Devy Chahal are new comers to DHS track and field. Their lack of experience, however, did not prevent them from progressing to Masters in the 800. After qualifying in 1:58.70 and 1:58.69 respectively, Harvey and Devy finished 4th and 5th in Friday's finals. The senior half-milers also contributed to the surprising boys 4x400 relay team that finished 5th in the section. Senior Frank Tempest ran the first leg, passing to Harvey, Devy, and finally, Sophomore Corey Tuttle. Corey finished off the exciting relay with a blazing 50.3 leg. The 4x400 team ran a season best 3:25.49 and advanced to Masters competition.
Like the girls 3200, the boys 3200 proved to be one of the most exciting Blue Devil performances of the day. Senior Brendan Gregg won the event in 9:19.91. He was followed by his teammates Patrick Lynch (5th), Matt Petersen (8th), and Kenny Durell (10th). All four 3200 Blue Devils qualified for Masters. Their distance running teammate, Zach Bonner, finished 3rd in the 1600 earlier in the day (4:26.06), also qualifying for Masters.
The 2007 Sac Joaquin Section Championships are over, but the season is not! 21 Blue Devil athletes will continue their season this Thursday and Friday at the Sac Joaquin Section Masters Meet at Hughes Stadium. Come support this awesome group of athletes! Masters qualifiers: Brendan Gregg, Kenny Durell, Patrick Lynch, Matt Petersen, Nathan Hoal, Wil Alexander, Harvey Chahal, Devy Chahal, Frank Tempest, Corey Tuttle, Zach Bonner, Laurynne Chetetat, Chelsea Reilly, Maddie Hall, Rebecca Hammond, Emily Dimond, Melinda Zavala, Cheyenne Feliz, Andrew Superak, Lauren Guerrieri and Josephine Devanbu.
